Poonam Poonia (60kg)
Date of Birth- July 15, 2002
Hometown- Burak Village, Hisar, Haryana

Poonam comes from a humble background (her father is a farmer) and at the age of 18, she was faced with a tough choice. She had an opportunity to take part in Railways recruitment trials and secure her future or take a shot at the World Youth Championships. The schedule for both the events were clashing. She chose the latter and went on to become a Youth World Champion in Poland in 2021.

She is a fast-paced learner; with the engulfing desire to make a mark in the sport of boxing. Her latest achievements include winning the gold medal at the 2022 National games followed by becoming the National champion at the Senior National Championships where she defeated World Championships bronze medallist and Tokyo Olympian Simranjit kaur in the final.

Her elder sister Sonu and younger brother Deepak are also boxers. Infact, Sonu was the one who inspired Poonam to take up boxing. Deepak is an upcoming boxer who won a bronze medal at Asian Youth Championships in 2022 and also represented India at the 2022 World Youth Championships. It’s fair to say that boxing runs in Poonam’s family.
