Indian boxers scripted history at Europe’s oldest amateur boxing tournament – the Strandja Cup – with yet another dazzling performance a year after recording the best-ever medal haul at this Bulgarian tournament. India bagged a total of seven medals with Asian Games gold-medallist Amit Panghal successfully defending his 49kg gold.
But the women stood out in the 70th edition of the Strandja Cup by taking the gold for the very first time from this event. Former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen (51kg) and Meena Kumari Devi (54kg) became the first set of Indian women boxers to notch up gold medals. While Manju Rani (48kg) got the silver, Pwilao Basumatari (64kg), Neeraj (60kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) took home the bronze.
Such a thunderous start not only set the tone for what was to become one of the most memorable years for Indian boxing but it also established Indian contingent as a boxing powerhouse.
