Indian Junior boxers clinch six gold, four silvers and one bronze at 5th International Sven Lange Memorial Tournament

Germany, December 18: The Indian boys’ boxing contingent of the country added another feather in their cap as the Junior (U-17) pugilists clinched six gold, four silvers and one bronze medal to complete a rich haul of medals at the 5th International Sven Lange Memorial Tournament which was conducted under accordance of AIBA here in Schwerin, late on Sunday night.

The three-day tournament saw pugilists from all over the world flocking to Schwerin for this prestigious tournament as they looked to prove their mettle.

Indian junior boxers started their journey on the prowl and their gold rush started with Bhavesh Kattamani’s immaculate display in the 52-kg category as he single handedly defeated Germany’s Lazek Sadek 5-0 in his final’s bout to clinch the gold. His gritty display during the tournament also earned him the ‘Best Fighter Award’ to add the cherry on top of the cake.

In the 60-kg category, Akshay’s spirited performance helped him emerge triumphant against Denmark’s Nikolai Terteryan with a slim margin of 3-2 to bag India’s second gold whereas Vijaydeep (63-kg) steamrolled past Brian Vossen of Netherland. Ish Pannu also registered an emphatic 5-0 victory against John Gerhauser of Germany. In the 75-kg and 80-kg category respectively, Vinit and Lakshay Chahar defeated Raphael Monny from France and Rasi Al-zein of Germany to make it a grand six golds for the Indian contingent.

Although there were ten entrants to the finals in various categories and six of them won gold, four of them put up staunch fights but marginally lost out to their respective opponents to settle for silver.

Anil’s (48-kg) close fought encounter against Germany’s Franklin Dwomoh earned him the silver as the judges adjudged the German to be the winner via split decision. Swapnil, in the 50-kg category, suffered the same fate as he lost out to Reece Deehan of England 3-2. Aman (54-kg) and Satender (+80-kg) were defeated comfortably as they lost out on their opportunity at gold by losing 5-0 to France’s Benik Melkumian and William Howe of England to take India’s silver tally to four.

The only bronze which came India’s way was through Aakash in the 66-kg weight category as he narrowly lost out to Slovania’s Gashi Sadik in the semi-finals.

The starry performance from these boxers also earned them the ‘Best Team’ of the tournament award.

This surely is a strong indication towards how the Boxing Federation of India has given opportunities to the younger lot and their performances have motivated the Federation to take more such steps towards the betterment of the sport at the grassroot levels.
