Ranked among the top boxers, Shiva Thapa, completed his campaign by clinching his fifth successive medal at the 2021 ASBC Asian Boxing Championship which was co-hosted by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and UAE Boxing Federation in Dubai last month.

At the latest championship, the Light welterweight category pugilist had a face-off with Baatarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia in the finals. After an intense match, a split verdict of 3-2 was announced in favour of Mongolia, with Thapa having to settle for silver. Recognised as India’s most successful male boxer, Thapa had made his way to the finals post defeating Bakhodur Usmonov of Tajikistan in a one-sided fight with a verdict of 4-0. He was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the London Olympics, and is among India’s most successful male boxer in Asian Boxing Championship with 5 medals so far since 2013.

The latest Championship, marked the return of international boxing in Asia post Covid-19 pandemic. It witnessed the presence of 150 pugilists from 17 countries and it was the last international tournament prior to the Tokyo Olympics.
