Shashi, Astha bring cheer to Indian camp
GUWAHATI: India had a mixed day inside the ring in the AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships (AWYWC) at Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium.
India won two bouts and lost one on Monday. Shashi Chopra first took on Uzbekistan’s Durdonakhon Rakhmatova in the 57 kg feather-weight category and won 5-0 without any fuss. Shashi used the double jab combo followed by a three-punch - left-right-left - burst to keep her Uzbeki opponent on the back-foot in the opening round.
Shashi, who recently won silver at the Ahmet Cormet Boxing Tournament in Istanbul, displayed further aggression as she bobbed and weaved out of Rakhmatova’s reach. Shashi continued her attacks, keeping it simple with straight jabs and short bursts in the final round to eventually take the bout away for a unanimous points decision.
In the 69 kg welter-weight category, Astha Pahwa defeated her Bulgarian opponent Melis Nezhdetova. “It was not very difficult but I could have done better. I was having a bit of a problem keeping my guard. In between, I received some punches,” said Astha.
India’s Vanlalhariatpuii lost to her aggressive Korean opponent AejiIm in the 60 kg lightweight category.
